You have undoubtedly heard of this phenomenon of falling in love with your curly hair. Everyone I know with curly hair speaks to the same issues. The curls are either too tight or too loose. The curls are either too frizzy or too defined. The curls fall to the left when you want them to fall to the right, or vise versa. Growing up in my mother's home in the 80s and 90s there was no such thing as just letting your hair go. It was either braided with beads, done in some sort of pigtail, ponytail style. Then I got my first relaxer and I could wear it out. Wearing it out meant wearing it down, whether it be in a bob with or without bangs or a layered cut style. Wearing it out meant your hair would fall into place; the expectation was that your hair would swing and sway when you turned your head. And until you learn what your curls need to thrive, there may be times when your hair looks like a dried out frizzy Afro (no commas). You have to learn about your curl pattern and your texture and who has time for that when you’re young and you’re just trying to do your hair for school, or go outside to play. You leave the house looking one way and you return home a whole other. Even a simple ponytail with bangs can go awry, if the curly hair is not styled with the right products.

My curly hair journey started in my 30s. I made the decision to cut off all of my hair and not relax it anymore, after I learned about the harmful chemicals in relaxers. I’ll never forget, a coworker told me 'you know every time you relax your hair, those chemicals are seeping into your brain, just like lotion into the skin'. Well that may have not have been exactly true, but it struck a cord for me. It changed the course of my hairstery.
